Being a maker means getting inspiration from the world around you and wanting to simplify things. This is how Jim Brown came up with his 3D printed automated GemCreator. He got this idea from his parents’ stories about their hand faceting hobby.
I Need Money!
Jim’s Kickstarter campaign isn’t necessarily aiming for mass production, but it is impressive that he has earned almost $3,200 in about one day after presenting his new machine. The main idea of the GemCreator is to semi-automatize the process of faceting a stone, such as creating equal edges. This will allow the creator only to need to work part of the time. His invention consists of parts made from ABS plastic and 3D printer electronics, as well as grinders, equally about $700. This is a very reasonable price compared to CNC routers but with the same function.
There are videos showing that his concept truly works well. It is not clear yet if the GemCreator will be able to facet other types of crystals and stones, only time will tell.
